Why DPFs Fail (and What to Do About It) in Bedford

22 April 2026 · 7 min read

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from the exhaust. To clear that soot it has to run a regeneration cycle — basically heating the filter to ~600°C by injecting extra fuel. That only works if you're driving at motorway speeds for 20+ minutes.

Most Bedford commuters never give the DPF a chance. School runs, town driving, short hops to the office — the filter clogs, the engine goes into limp mode, and the dashboard lights up like Christmas. A replacement DPF from a main dealer can be £1,500-£3,000.

Two options. First: regular motorway runs and a forced regeneration when needed (we offer this in the workshop). Second: a DPF delete — we remove the filter from the exhaust and rewrite the ECU to ignore it. Off-road use only, but it eliminates the problem permanently and gives back a small amount of power.
